A 49-year old pastor identified as Moyo Martins, on Tuesday was
arraigned by the Sabo Police Station before a Yaba Chief
Magistrate’s Court for allegedly cutting off the fingers of a
two-year-old child, Saidat Faleye kept in his care.
The incident, according to PUNCH, occurred on Olumo Street, Iwaya
Onike, Yaba, Lagos State.
It was learnt that the victim’s mother, Mrs. Bola Faleye, had left
little Saidat in the care of Martins on Thursday, so she could quickly
take her birth. While she was gone, the child and suspect were
reportedly together alone in his room.
The piercing cry from the child five minutes later, led neighbors to
rush in the direction of Martins room.
Mrs. Faleye was alerted and she immediately rushed to the scene in
panic only to find where her child’s ring and little fingers used
to be dripping blood – Martins had them off.
It was alleged that the suspect sawed off the fingers in his room.
Saidat was reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
It was learnt that the suspect initially feigned ignorance of what had
happened but after he was arrested and interrogated, he allegedly
confessed that he did it in error and pleaded to be forgiven.
The police arraigned him on a one count charge which reads, ‘That
you, Moyo Martins, on March 6, 2014, about 1.10pm, at 5, Olumo Street,
Iwaya Onike, Yaba, Lagos in the Yaba Magisterial District, did use
sharp saw to cut off the left finger of one Saidat Faleye, aged 2
According to the police prosecutor, Mr. F. Ifijeh, the offence was
punishable under Section 243 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State,
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge and elected summary
trial at the magistrate’s court.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Y.O Aje-Afunwa, admitted him to bail in the
sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum while she adjourned the
case till April 24, 2014.
